Course Description:

In this course participants will learn about challenges in obtaining representative water quality samples in wells that intersect multiple water contributing zones such as fractures in crystalline rock or permeable sedimentary layers. Water quality obtained from such wells are averages influenced by the water quality, flow rates, and hydraulic heads in individual zones. Water levels in wells during sampling and purging also have a strong influence on zone water quality averaging. In this course we will review these issues and how to best sample to determine the most representative samples depending on what is your interest - what people are drinking or levels of contamination in individual zones- and how best to focus remediation efforts to maximize contaminant mass extraction.

  • What factures influence water quality in wells that intersect multiple permeable contributing zones
  • Efforts and cost of conventional well logging
  • Dissolved oxygen alternation method to locate active flow zones in wells
  • Sampling active zones

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Gary Robbins is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Connecticut. He has been a hydrogeologist for over 40 years. His professional experience includes working as a Federal regulator, consultant to the USEPA and other Federal agencies, consultant to state environmental regulatory agencies throughout the U.S,, Project Hydrogeologist for Woodward-Clyde Consultants working on a variety of groundwater contamination-related projects, and Professor of Geosciences and Natural Resources. His most recent research focused on improving methods for investigating groundwater flow and contamination in fractured crystalline bedrock.
